Carmela Valles came to Peterborough from the Philippines as a student in 1990. From 2001-2010 she was the Executive Director of the New Canadians Centre in Peterborough (www.nccpeterborough.ca), a publicly-funded agency that provides new immigrants with a variety of support services. She now works as an immigration consultant. |

For example, we worked with the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Development Board, and the New Canadians Centre Peterborough to submit a funding proposal to the Ontario Chamber of Commerceto establish a business integration advisory centre. If approved, the proposed centre will provide many services to small- to medium-sized employers (SMEs) with the goal of ultimately improving labour market access and outcomes for both existing and newly arrived immigrants. These services will include one-on-one business consulting to recruit and hire foreign-trained workers, support accreditation processes, and create work cultures and resources to retain immigrant employees We will also be working closely with Professor Davina Bhandar of the Canadian Studies Department at Trent University to establish linkages between the research needs of the PPCII and the expertise of faculty members and graduate students at Trent University. It is anticipated that this network will be a member of the Welcoming Communities Initiative, which promotes academic-community collaborations to support newcomer inclusion in small- to medium-sized cities. OutreachThe PPCII works closely with the New Canadians Centre Peterborough to provide education to the general public about issues related to immigration. Examples of presentation topics include: the difference between the immigration classes, barriers faced in settlement, and cross-cultural communication.
