Objective: Involve immigrants in the social, cultural, and political life of the Peterborough community

3.1       Hold a city hall welcome party/newcomers welcoming fair

3.2       Host a multicultural show in collaboration with the Little Lake Music Fest

3.3       Host a citizenship ceremony

3.4       Invite newcomers to social events and service club meetings and offer volunteer opportunities

3.5       Access city funds (immigrants) for cultural organizing

3.6       Create a directory of cultural groups in Ptbo.

3.7       Advertise organizations (Newcomer’s Club, etc.) and free events at immigrant-serving organizations and in immigrant communities

 

What’s Happening?

NCC Spring Citizenship Ceremony (Spring 2011) The New Canadians Centre Peterborough hosted a Citizenship Ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, April 14, 2011, and a reception at the Canadian Canoe Museum  from 6-9pm. The Citizenship ceremony was a great success, and everyone enjoyed the reception, which allowed guests to “See Canada by Canoe!” It is anticipated that the Citizenship Ceremony become an annual event in Peterborough.

Peterborough Newcomers: The Peterborough Newcomers’ is open to men and women, both individuals and couples, new to Peterborough and area. We get together to learn about the community, meet others with common interests, organize social activities and make new friends. Before joining Newcomers’, visitors may attend two monthly meetings and are welcome to join at any time during the year. 

PPCII Newcomers advisory Group: Is a committee of the PPCII that meets bimonthly to discuss issues that are important to newcomers. More information about the committee can be found here.

Healthy Communities: Engaging marginalized populations: This is a joint project between the Peterborough Social Planning Council, and the local health unit which is taking a lead in the healthy communities initiative. A research publication about the project can be found here.

Multicultural Organizations in Peterborough Project - In February of 2011, the PPCII funded research to be completed by Charterfield Consulting on the different multicultural organizations of Peterborough. A list of the organizations is available here.
