Objective: Research barriers to immigrant integration, including discrimination and public policy and determine how to address them 5.1 Discuss barriers with local employees who live outside of the city 5.2 Investigate ways to go beyond diversity and cultural window dressing; establish what inclusion means locally 5.3 Investigate how barriers can be removed and better service provision provided 5.4 Conduct a social audit of settlement services 5.5 Inform officials of how important universal health care is to newcomers 5.6 Lobby the government for longer visitation visas
What’s Happening? What Does Inclusion Mean Locally? The PPCII is currently working with the Trent Centre for Community Based Education to develop a research project for a student in the 2011/2012 year. In this project, the student will look at policies across sectors: public service, health, business, education etc. to ask the question: what does inclusion mean to the business/organization? Is there a standard of inclusion that is consistent in the Peterborough area? The researcher will develop a tool to measure how Peterborough as a community interprets ‘inclusion’, showing which areas of inclusion are most widely recognized, and which areas are seldom recognized.
What You Can Do to Get Involved! The PPCII is always looking to partner with social service organizations and research organizations to ask questions about the barriers to immigrant integration. If you or your organization is interested in conducting such research, please contact Safo Musta at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
