The Chen family - Jiubin, Ina, and Isabelle - first arrived in Peterborough from France in January 2009 after living in Paris for five years. Both Jiubin and Ina are university-educated. Jiubin has a Ph.D. from the University of Paris in chemistry. He held a research appointment for two years at Trent University. |

Hugo Gonzalez Santiago from Mexico attended Fleming College in the fall of 2010. He developed a reflective piece on our community as part of his placement with the Peterborough Social Planning Council. Here is an excerpt from his journal for October 17-23: "On Friday, a professor of Fleming take us to Toronto to attend the Dalai Lama Conference, it was really interesting. I was surprised because there I saw a lot of Chinese people and people from other places in the South East Asia. We also went to Chinese Town; it was amazing seeing that in this place everything is in Chinese, banks, stores. With this experience I could see the importance of culture in Canada and I’m happy that Canadian government allows it, because in other countries, minorities are persecuted."Read about Hugo's experiences in full here
